Afrikaans, 'n Versoeningstaal

Kommentaar: Afrikaans, 'n Versoeningstaal

It is, so they said,
the language of the oppressor.
It comes, so they said,
from the mouth of Europe.
It has, so they said,
only a singular style - just one to communicate
but from the under belly of Africa she comes.
from the mouthes of slaves, Europeans, and indigenous peoples.

She dances to the rhythm
of ancient drums and hand-made guitars.
She wears costumes of many colours
and sings in a thousand voices.

Now, with the stormy years gone by,
her dance is slower
but she embraces the shoulders of her sisters
with a conciliatory kiss for every cheek.
She is not in that fight for identity -
along the grail of the African renaissance, she finds her way.
