Biografie

Alle kultuurgroepe is welkom.

Biography

The Eastern Cape Children's Choir, based in Port Elizabeth, South Africa

The Eastern Cape Children's Choir (ECCC) was founded in 1982 and has been under the expert leadership of Lionel van Zyl, senior lecturer in voice at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth, since 1986.

Musically gifted children (boys and girls) between the ages of 10 and 15 years enter the choir following a successful audition. Children are selected based only on musicality and singing talent. All cultural groups are welcome.

The choir is famous for the pure sound of its children's voices. Choral works written specifically for children's choir (equal voices) are preferred. The choir sings in many languages, e.g. Afrikaans, English, German, Latin, French, Czech and African languages e.g. Xhosa.

The ECCC is often invited to perform, amongst others at schools, during church services, functions in the Feathermarket Hall in Port Elizabeth and at concerts with the local Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra.

International concert tours are undertaken every second year. Because these tours are the result of invitations by choirs abroad, our choristers are hosted by families of these choirs' members. In this way South African children have the opportunity to see and experience foreign cultures' lifestyles. They also learn to act independently and to communicate across language boundaries.

Tour 2008: This year the choir will depart on 14 September, by invitation of choirs in Germany, Finland and Estonia, on its 9th international concert tour. The ECCC has in the past shared the stage with many international acclaimed choirs, amongst others the Vienna Boys Choir.

Development program: In 2004 a development program was established. This means that talented children, who can normally not afford singing in the choir, are granted the opportunity to join the choir. Thanks to all opportunities offered by the choir, these children can develop together with their peers from all economic groups and backgrounds. Unfortunately no sponsorship could be obtained for the development program over the past two years, which placed a huge financial burden upon the choir. In spite of this fact, 25 children formed part of this program during the first three years and another 12 were identified for the 2008 year. We would however like to further extend this program.
