Prepositional Combinations

What you should already know

You should know what pronouns are. You should also know what prepositions are. You should be very comfortable with this list of verbs that take prepositions

What is a Prepositional Combination?

Some verbs connect the subject and object directly. E.g. I see you. She asks him.

Some verbs use prepositions. For example. I talk ABOUT him. I write TO you.

Afrikaans and English do not always use the same prepositions. E.g. I talk TO you. > Ek praat MET jou.  ... but this is not the issue for today. Here is the issue. When you have a verb and a preposition, followed by an object pronoun, no problem, except if the object pronoun is IT. So, when you say,
I look AT them. > Ek kyk NA hulle. ....now for the look at the use of IT.
I look at it. > Ek kyk DAARNA. (rather than Ek kyk NA dit.)

Die kinders dink ...
 ... AAN MY    √
 ... AAN JOU   √
 ... AAN U
 ... AAN HOM   √

... AAN HAAR
 ... AAN DIT       X    >   DAARAAN
 ... AAN ONS

... AAN JULLE
 ... AAN HULLE

A preposition before DIT (for statements) or WAT (for questions) causes a change. Here is what happens:

Preposition + DIT = DAAR+Preposition

e.g. HE SITS ON IT.       > HE SITS THEREON.
WE FELL OVER IT. > WE FELL THEREOVER.

1) in dit     >  daarin (there in)     Dit is daarin.
2) van dit  >  daarvan (about it) Weet jy daarvan?
3) aan dit  >  daaraan (there in) Glo jy daaraan?

Preposition + WAT = WAAR+Preposition

e.g. IN WHAT IS IT?       >  WHEREIN IS IT?
ON WHAT WAS IT? >  WHEREON WAS IT?

1) aan wat  >  waaraan  (to what)  Waaraan kan jy dit toeskryf*? *TO ATTRIBUTE
2) in wat      >  waarin (in what) Waarin moet ek die geld sit.
3) op wat    >  waarop (on what) Waarop baseer jy daardie stelling*.  *STATEMENT

THE TWO IRREGULARITIES: MET and VIR

MET > MEE e.g. DAARMEE & WAARMEE (not Daarmet or Waarmet)
VIR > VOOR e.g. DAARVOOR & WAARVOOR (not Daarvir or Waarvir)

1) met dit   > daarmee (with that)          Kan ek jou daarmee help?
2) met wat > waarmee (with what)       Waarmee kan ek jou help?
3) vir wat   > waarvoor (why/for what)  Waarvoor gaan jy dit ruil?
4) vir dit     > daarvoor (for that)            Ek sal daarvoor vra.

NB: For "THIS" instead of "IT" or "THAT" use HIER-  e.g. My geld is hierin.
