NOTES

PRONUNCIATION / LISTENING / READING

A. Pronounce and Understanding fluently: Listen several times with attention to pronunciation only. Reread the text a few  times to perfect your pronunciation. When you feel comfortable with your pronunciation, look at the translation. Now focus on understanding everything. Repeat the listening and speaking until you understand the Afrikaans fluently.  Make notes of words that you feel are difficult for you to pronounce or that you still do not understand. Share that with the instructor by clicking on the feedback link at the bottom of the screen.

B. 1 --Understand fluently -- Listen to the first two versions of THE BOY several times. Pay attention during the 100% English version (100/0) of the story. Keep reading the second version (75% Eng /25% Afr) until you understand the Afrikaans fluently.  Do the same with version three (75/25) and version four (0/100)
2 -- Pronounce it -- For versions 2-4 read it out loud too until you feel your pronunciation is spot on. Make notes of words that you feel are harder for you to pronounce or understand and email the teacher.

VOCABULARY

A. Focus first on pronouncing well, then focus on being able to recall each term, and then focus on fast recall -- that means no hesitation!

GRAMMAR

A -- Listen to the Introduction and you should be able to explain the following concepts:
The sentence: What is a subject? What is a verb? What is an object?
Word types: What is a noun, a pronoun, a verb, an adjective, an adverb, a preposition?
Tenses: What is present, future, and past? What is a progressive (continuous) tense? What is a perfect tense?

B --  Do the activities on the Web site and know each word without any hesitation.

C -- Learn a list of regular verbs like slaap, sit, werk, eet, drink, etc. and make sentences in the present, future, and past tense.
Replace names of people with pronouns.

D -- Make questions with sentences that are in the present, future, or past tense sentences.

E --Make a sentence in present, future or past negative.

F -- The first spot is the subject, the second spot is the verb, and the third spot is the object.

G -- Work on sentences with either an object pronoun, a negation, or a time word and learn to place them correctly.

H --  Learn a select group of verbs that take prepositions, e.g. 'I speak TO you', and not 'I speak you'.

I -- Learn  TO HAVE and TO BE in Afrikaans.

J -- Learn to use these two verb groups that do not get the GE- added to the verb to make it past tense.

TESTING A

Pronunciation -- Read and pronounce so that any native speaker will understand everything you say.

Vocabulary -- Know all the terms so that you can do an English to Afrikaans test on all the terms.

Grammar -- Know the concepts, explain each principles and give examples. Do sentence translations.

Reading -- Read and explain selected texts.

Listening -- Hear a story and explain what you heard.
