Jy Vir My (Introduksie)

Baie dankie, ek wou ´n liedjie sing hier vanaad,
hier in Pretoria,
Umm... en dit het ´n bietjie
van ´n vreemde onststaaansgeskiedenis,
en ´n liedjie kan in my geval onstaan
deur ´n bietjie rare assosiasies
bymekaar te gooi in ´n pot
en dan daarin bietjie rond te roer,
en hier zijn twee assosiasies elk wat
wat deur die liedjie onststaan is --
die eerste was ´n besoek
aan ´n toneelstuk in Oudtshoorn
van die 'Goue Seun', toneelstuk
wat ek baie geniet het
oor Uys Krige

-- die my lief is, waarom?
Die boek was so interessant,
en dus ´n man na my hart.

(nou dink julle natuurlik, nou gaan hy los)
net so bietjie hoog - Piet Retief gehalte.
So ´n ... Die Voortrekkersmonument ja...
Dis so bietjie soos die Taalmonument in die Paarl, weet jy
Toe ek die eerste keer daar by die Taalmonument stond,
dag ek, so lelik monument vir so ´n mooi taal.
dink ek as Sigmund Freud nog had geleef,
dan had hy ´n aardige psigo-analise
op die Afrikaner kultuur kon uitvoer.

Daar´s hy.

Die interessante ding is
by die Voortrekkersmonument
jy moet alles in jou lewe ´n keer gesien hebbe.
Vind ek.
Vir julle is dit natuurlik ´n normale saak
As jy vroeger hier het gewoon,
of jy wou of nie, verstaan jy.
Maar ek ook. Ek het daar... toe ek daar aankwam,
seg ek teenoor die jong, my kameraad
Dan sien jy so die sin
as ek op so ´n punt staan, verstaan jy.
Dus, Die diepte begin my ´n bietjie te trek
Maar as ek êrens gaan val,
is dit nie op die woorde nie.
So, die sin sin sit in my kop,
so is ek tuisgekom in Europa,
en so het die liedjie onstaan.

Thanks much, I wanted to sing a song here tonight
That is a bit of a premier.
We tried it a few times in Potch, at Aardklop
The song originated in June this year
here in Pretoria
Umm... And it has a bit
of a strange originating history.
And a song, in my case, can evolve
through rare associations
thrown together in a pot
and then stirred around into it
and here are two associations, each that
originated with the song –
the first was a visit
to a play in Oudtshoorn
to the 'Golden Boy' play
that I really enjoyed
about Uys Krige

and there after I was in Stellenbosch,
where I bought a book about Kannemeyer
and on the flight back
I read about a man
– who is in love, why?
The book was so interesting,
because you actually read the history of South Africa
through the perspective of one man,
from the 20's through the 80's.
The period in which of course
much happened
and there was Uys Krige
– someone who sought the middle way.*
Never sought the extreme,*
and thus a man after my heart.
This was the one side of the story.

The other side of the association
that originates in the song is completely different
It was a visit to the Voortrekker monument
(now you think of course, now he's going to let loose)
I am not a proponent of such architecture.
It's a bit lofty this building, you get it
A ligttle high – Piet Retief quality.
Such a, the Voortrekker monument, yea,
Kind of like the Language monument in Paarl,
you know
When I stood the first time by the language]
monument
I though, what ugly monument for such a beautiful language. And looking at it a bit longer,
When I stared at the monument a little longer, that one in Paarl,
I thought, had Sigmund Freud still been alive
then he would have had an odd psycho analysis
about the Afrikaner culture

That's it.

The interesting thing is
at the Voortrekker monument
you must see everything once in your life
I find
for you it is a normal affair,
if you lived here earlier
you went there on school trips
to the Voortrekker monument
and if you wanted to or not, you understand
But I too. There I did, when I got there
I said to my young friend
I want to go to the top up the stairs
Thus we climbed to the copula
where you can look down
Then you see the sentence
“WE for you South Africa”
But I am always a little scared of heights
And as I stand at this point, you see
Thus, the depths begin to pull me
But if I am going to fall somewhere
it won't be on the words,
So the sentence is in my head
and on the other side the book of Uys Krige
So when I got home to Europe
and thus the song originated.
