Woorde: Tradisioneel
Musiek: S.A. Volkswysie; verwerk: CHRIS LAMPRECHT

There comes the Alibama, the Alibama comes over the seas
There comes the Alibama, the Alibama comes over the seas
Girl, girl, the reed bed girl, the reed bed has been made
the reed bed has been made for me to sleep on it.
Girl, girl, the reed bed girl, the reed bed has been made
the reed bed has been made for me to sleep on it.

The Alibama, the Alibama comes over the seas.
The Alibama, the Alibama comes over the seas.

==========================

A traditional Afrikaans song, popular among the Cape Malays. One story regarding its origins is that Admiral Semmes from the US Confederate ship "Alabama" called in Cape Town during the American Civil War in 1863 after capturing the Federal ship "Sea Bride" in Table Bay. There was a party on the beach and provisions were handed out provisions seized during raids.

The other theory behind the song is that a boat called "Alabama" brought thatching reads to Cape Town from St Helena Bay on the West Coast of South Africa. (I think I like the first story better.)
