A long time ago, a husband and wife lived happily in a cottage.

One day, the pregnant wife fell ill.

The garden belonged to a wicked witch, who grew the herb for her spells.

One day, the witch caught the husband creeping into her garden.

The witch said, “You are a thief so you should be punished!”

“My wife is pregnant. I should take care of her. Please forgive me!” the husband cried out.

“I see. I will let you go and also give some rapunzel. But you should promise me to give your first-born child in return,” the witch said.

The husband thought that the witch would soon forget the promise so said, “yes, I promise.”

A few months later, a baby girl was born and the witch did not forget the promise.

The witch took her away and locked the baby girl up in a high tower with no door but with only one window.

The baby girl grew up as a beautiful girl with a long blond hair.

When the witch came to see her, she stood at the bottom of the tower and called out,

However, he could not find a door so wonder how anyone could be there.

He decided to stay there and listen to the singing.

After a while the witch came along and the prince watched her carefully.

Finally, he figured out how to enter the tower.

After the witch had gone, the prince stood where the witch had been and called, "Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your long hair."

He climbed up as the witch had done and found the most beautiful girl he had ever seen.

They talked for a long time and fell deeply in love.

As usual the prince came to the tower and called, “Rapunzel, Rapunzel, let down your long hair.”
| 왕자는 평소와 같이 탑으로 와서 “라푼젤, 라푼젤 머리를 내려다오,” 하고 불렀어요.

The witch, who had secured Rapunzel’s plait of golden hair inside the window, threw it down.
| 라푼젤의 땋은 금발 머리로 위장한 마녀는 그것을 내렸어요.

The prince climbed up eagerly and saw the witch not his love, Rapunzel.
| 왕자는 열심히 올라왔고 그의 사랑 라푼젤이 아닌 마녀를 보았어요.

The astonished prince jumped out of the high window, but was not killed for he landed in a clump of thorny bushes.

However, his face was badly scratched and his eyes hurt so that he could not see.

After several days of wandering and suffering, he heard a voice singing.

Following the sound, he found Rapunzel, who was singing as she worked to make a home for herself in the forest.

The prince took Rapunzel to his father's palace.
