옛날 시골에 살고 있던 한 선비가 과거를 치루기 위해 서울로 떠났어요.
| A long time ago, a scholar who lived in the country side left for Seoul to take a government exam.

여행 중, 선비는 한 까치의 울음소리를 들었고 그것은 그 새가 큰 곤경에 빠진 것 처럼 들렸어요.
| During the journey the scholar heard a magpie’s screaming and it sounded like the bird was in big trouble.
|
선비는 그 새에게 무슨 일이 일어났는지 알아보기 위해 빨리 걸었어요.
| The scholar walked faster in order to figure out what happened to the birth.
|
그는 커다란 뱀이 둥지에 있는 그 까치의 새끼를 잡아먹으려 하는 것을 보았어요.
| He saw a big snake was trying to eat the magpie’s chicks in the nest.
|
그는 그의 등에 있던 활로 그 뱀을 쏘았고 그 뱀은 그 활에 맞아 죽었어요.
| He shot an arrow he had on his back to the snake and the snake was shot to death.
|
그 까치는 즐겁게 지저귀었고 그것이 선비에게는 마치 “정말 감사합니다,” 처럼 들렸어요.
| The magpie was merrily chirping and it sounded like “Thank you so much,” to the scholar.
|
밤이 오자 그는 하룻 밤 묶을 수 있는 장소를 찾았지만 어떤 장소도 찾을 수 가 없었어요.
| As night came on, he was looking for some places he could stay one night but he could not find any places.
|
갑자기 그는 멀리 떨어진 집으로부터 나오는 희미한 빛을 보았어요.
| Suddenly he saw a faint light coming from a house far away.
|
“다행이다! 오늘 밤 저곳에서 머물 수 있겠어,” 선비는 안심했어요.
| “Thanks God! I guess I can stay there tonight,” the scholar was relieved.
|
그는 그 집에 도착해서 문을 두드렸어요.
| He reached the house and knocked on the door.
|
“실례합니다, 하루밤 머무를 수 있을까요?” 선비는 말했어요.
| “Excuse me, can I stay here for one night?” the scholar said.
|
한 젊은 여자가 맞이하며 말했어요, “네 이곳에서 머물며 편히 쉬세요.”
| A young woman answered the door and said “Yes, you can stay here and take some rest.”
|
선비는 하루 종일 걸었기에 너무도 피곤해서 바로 잠 들었어요.
| The scholar was very exhausted from walking all day and fell asleep immediately.
|
몇 시간 후, 그는 갑자기 잠에서 깼어요 왜냐하면 그는 누군가 그의 목을 조르고 있다는 것을 느꼈거든요.
| A few hours later, he suddenly woke up because he felt someone was choking him.
|
그는 그의 목을 단단히 감고 있는 큰 뱀을 보았고 공포로 얼어붙었어요.
| He saw a gigantic snake coiling tightly around his neck and he was frozen with terror.
|
그 뱀은 말했어요, “널 죽이고 말꺼야 왜냐하면 너는 내 남편을 죽였으니까!”
| The snake said, “I will kill you because you murdered my husband!”
|
그는 몇 시간 전 그 선비에 의해 죽은 남편의 아내가 여자로 변신해서 그를 죽이기 위해 기다리고 있다는 것을 깨달았어요.
| He realized that the wife whose husband was killed by the scholar a few hours ago was waiting changing into a woman to kill him.
|
그는 목숨을 구걸하며 말했어요, “제발 살려줘. 나는 너의 남편을 죽일 의도는 없었어. 나는 단지 활을 쏘아서 까치 새끼를 잡아먹으려던 너의 남편을 겁주어 쫓아내려던 것 뿐이었어. 나는 엄마 까치가 불쌍했어.”
| He begged for his life and said, “Please let me live. I had no intention of killing your husband. I only tried to scare your husband trying to eat magpie chicks away by shooing an arrow. I felt sorry for the magpie mother.”

그 뱀은 말했어요, “내 자식의 어미로서, 나는 너의 행동을 이해해 그래서 너에게 살 수 있는 한번의 기회를 주겠어.”
| The snake said, “As a mother of my children, I understand your acting so I will give you one change to live.”
|
“이 집 뒤에는 종이 한 개 있어. 만약 네가 그 종을 자정까지 세 번 울린다면, 나는 너를 살려줄꺼야,” 그 뱀은 말했어요.
| “There is a bell behind this house. If you ring the bell three times by midnight, I will let you live,” the snake said.
|
“고마워. 나는 너의 친절함을 잊지 못할꺼야,” 그 선비는 소리쳤어요.
| “Thank you. I will never forget your kindness,” the scholar exclaimed.
|
그러나 선비는 곧 절망에 빠졌어요 왜냐하면 그 종은 닿을 수 없을 정도로 높았어요.
| However, the scholar felt into despair soon because the bell was too high to reach.
|
그는 계속해서 그 종을 울리려고 노력했지만 할 수 가 없었어요.
| He kept trying to ring the bell but he could not.
|
갑자기 뱀이 나타나서 말했어요, “거의 자정이구나. 이제 죽을 준비를 해.”
| Suddenly the snake appeared and said, “It is almost midnight. Now prepare to die.”
|
그 때, 종이 정확하게 울렸어요, “동, 동, 동.”
| Just then, the bell rang clearly, “dong, dong, dong.”
|
선비와 뱀은 모두 놀랐어요 왜냐하면 그 곳에는 종을 울릴 수 있는 방법이 없었거든요.
| Both the scholar and the snake were shocked because there was no way to ring the bell.
|
뱀은 선비를 보며 말했어요, “나는 나의 약속을 지켜야하니까 너를 살려주마.”
| The snake looked at the scholar and said, “I must keep my promise so I will let you live.”
|
그 선비는 어떻게 종이 울렸는지 아직도 이해할 수 없었어요.
| The scholar still couldn’t understand how the bell rang.
|
그는 종으로 걸어가서 주변을 살펴보았어요.
| He walked to the ring and looked around.
|
땅을 보던 그 순간, 그는 머리가 깨져 죽어있는 엄마 까치를 발견했어요.
| At the moment he looked at the ground, he found the magpie mother with crushed skulls and clearly dead.
|
선비가 베푼 은혜를 갚기 위해, 그 까치는 그를 따라왔고 뱀이 말한 모든 것을 들었어요.
| To repay the kindness of the scholar, the magpie had followed him and heard everything the snake said.
|
선비가 그의 힘으로 종을 울릴 수 없음을 깨닫자, 까치는 그 종을 세번 울리기 위해 그 자신의 몸을 사용한 것이었어요.
| Realizing that the scholar couldn’t ring the bell on his own, the magpie used its own body to make the bell ring three times.
|
선비는 죽은 까치를 손에 안고 오랫동안 울었답니다.
| The scholar held the dead magpie in his hands and cried for a long time.
