아주 오래 전, 한 잘생긴 소년과 한 아름다운 소녀가 하늘 나라에서 살고 있었어요.
| For a very long time ago, there lived a handsome and a beautiful girl in the Sky Kingdom.

그 소년은 소를 모는 목동이었고 소녀는 옷을 짜는 직공이었어요.
| The boy was a cow-herder and the girl was a cloth weaver.
|
그래서 사람들은 그 소년을 견우 그리고 그 소녀를 직녀라고 불렀어요.
| So people called a boy as Kyoun-woo (which means a cow-herder in Korean) and a girl as Gik-nye (which means a cloth weaver in Korean).
|
왕은 그의 딸 직녀를 무척 사랑했고 그녀에게 알맞은 배우자를 찾기 원했어요.
| The king loved his daughter, Gik-nye, very much and wanted to find a right partner for her.
|
왕은 견우를 직녀의 배우자로 선택했어요 왜냐하면 그들 모두 매우 부지런하고 그들의 일을 사랑했으니까요.
| The king chose Kyoun-woo as Gik-nye’s spouse because they are both very diligent and love their own jobs.
|
견우와 직녀는 곧 서로 사랑에 빠졌고, 그들은 함께 있어 행복했어요.
| Kyoun-woo and Gik-nye felt in love with each other soon and they were very happy together.
|
그러나 그들은 곧 왕의 눈 밖에 벗어나기 시작했어요 왜냐하면 그들이 결혼한 이후로 그들은 일하지 않고 놀기만 했으니까요.
| However, they soon began to fall out of the king’s favor because they had never worked and just played since they got married.
|
왕은 그 부부에게 너무도 화가 나서 그들에게 서로 떨어져 살 것을 명령했어요.
| The king became very angry with the couple and ordered them to live far apart from each other.
|
그래서 견우는 동쪽으로 추방됐고 직녀는 서쪽으로 추방됐어요.
| So Kyoun-woo was banished to the East and Gik-nye was banished to the West.
|
그러나 왕은 작은 자비를 허락했어요.
| However, the king permitted one small mercy.
|
매년 7월 7일, 그들은 밝고 넓은 은하수 강에서 만나는 것을 허락받았어요.
| On July 7th of each year, they were allowed to meet at the Milky Way, a bright, wide river.
|
그들은 서로를 그리워하며 그들이 만날 날만 기다렸어요.
| They had missed each other and just waited for the day when they met.
|
마침내 그들이 서로 볼 수 있는 그 날이 왔어요.
| Finally, the day came when they could see each other.
|
견우는 은하수 강의 동쪽 둑에 그리고 직녀는 은하수 강의 서쪽 둑에 도착했어요.
| Kyoun-woo reached the Milky Way’s east bank, and Gik-nye reached the west bank.
|
그러나 그들은 서로 이야기 할 수 없었어요 왜냐하면 강이 너무 넓었으니까요.
| However, they could not speak each other because the river was so wide.
|
강에 의해 갈라진 사랑하는 두 연인은 울고 또 울었어요.
| The two lovers, separated by the big river, cried and cried.
|
그들의 눈물은 비로 변해 지상에 떨어졌어요.
| Their tears turned into rain and fell to the ground on Earth.
|
비는 그치지 않았고 그 비는 온 세상에 홍수를 일으켰어요.
| The rain didn’t stop and the heavy rain caused floods all over the world.
|
모든 사람들의 집은 떠내려갔고 아무도 그 홍수를 더이상 견딜 수 없었어요.
| All peoples’ homes were washing away and nobody could endure the flood any longer.
|
새들은 하늘 나라로 가서 무엇이 그 홍수를 만들어냈는지 알아냈어요.
| Birds went to the Sky Kingdom and figured out what made the flood.
|
모든 사람들과 동물들은 그 비를 어떻게 그칠 수 있는지 토론했고 마침내 그 연인들이 서로 만날 수 있게 은하수 강 위로 다리를 만들자고 결정했어요.
| All peoples and animals discussed how to stop the rain and finally decided to make a bridge over the Milky Way in order to make the lovers to meet each other.

까치와 까마귀가 그 다리를 만들도록 선택되었어요 왜냐하면 그들은 하늘 나라에 닿을 수 있었고 충분히 강했으니까요.
| The magpies and crows were chosen to make the bridge because they could reach the Sky Kingdom and they were strong enough.
|
그들은 견우와 직녀가 그들의 머리를 밟고 은하수 강을 건널 수 있도록 그들의 몸을 이용해서 다리를 지었어요.
| They built a bridge using their bodies so that Kyoun-woo and Gik-nye could step on their heads and cross the Milky Way.
|
견우와 직녀는 매우 행복해서 울음을 멈추었고 마침내 지상의 비 역시 멈추었어요.
| Kyoun-woo and Gik-nye were very happy and stopped crying and finally the rain on Earth also stopped.
|
하루가 저물어 가고 견우와 직녀는 일년 후 은하수 강에서 다시 만나자는 약속과 함께 헤어져야만 했어요.
| When the day came to a close, Kyoun-woo and Gik-nye had to say goodbye with the promise to meet at the Milky Way again one year later.
|
그 이후로 매년 7월 7일, 모든 까치와 까마귀는 그 연인들을 위해 다리를 지으러 하늘 나라로 날아갑니다.
| After then, every year on July 7th, all magpies and crows fly to the Milky Way to build a bridge for the lovers.
|
한국 사람들은 매년 7월 7일 견우와 직녀가 은하수 강에서 만나 기쁨의 눈물을 흘리기 때문에 비가 온다고 믿습니다.
| Koreans believe that on every July 7th, it rains because Kyoun-woo and Gik-nye cry tears of joy with their meeting at the Milky Way.
