옛날, 작은 연못에 어린 청개구리가 그의 홀어머니와 살고 있었어요.

어느 날, 그의 어머니는 그에게 간절하게 산에 가지 말라고 부탁했어요 왜냐하면 그녀는 그곳에 뱀이 있을 지도 모른다고 들었으니까요.
| One day, his mother desperately asked him not to go to the mountain because she heard that there might be some snakes.
|
아니나 다를까, 그 작은 청개구리는 산으로 가서 말했어요, “하!하!하! 봤지? 여기에 뱀은 없어. 우리 엄마는 항상 나에 대해 너무 많은 걱정을 하셔.”
| As expected, the little green frog went to the mountain and said, “Ha! Ha! Ha! See? There is no snake here. My mom is always too much concern about me.”

바로 그 때, 무서운 뱀이 나타나서 그 청개구리를 잡아 먹으려 했어요.
| Just at that moment, a scary snake appeared and tried to eat the green frog.

청개구리는 너무도 무서워서 심지어 도망갈 수도 없었어요.
| The green frog was so dreadful that he was even unable to run away.

한편 그의 어머니는 그녀의 아들이 산으로 갔다는 소리를 듣고 그 산으로 뛰어갔어요.
| Meanwhile, his mother heard that her son went to the mountain and ran up to the mountain.

그녀는 뱀이 그녀의 아들을 죽이기 직전에 그 산에 도착했어요.
| She arrived at the mountain just before a snake killed her son.

그녀는 뱀을 향해 돌을 던졌고 그것은 정확하게 뱀의 오른쪽 눈을 맞췄어요.
| She threw a stone at the snake and it exactly hit the snake’s right eye.

그 뱀은 너무도 화가나서 미친듯이 그의 꼬리를 휘둘렀어요.
| The snake was so upset and frantically swung his tail.

그 뱀의 꼬리가 그녀의 아들을 치기 직전 그녀는 그에게 달려가서 그를 감싸안았어요.
| Right before the snake’s tail hit her son she ran up to him and cover him up.

뱀은 그의 꼬리로 그녀를 세게 치고는 숲으로 도망쳤어요.
| The snake hit her so hard with his tail and ran away to a forest.
|
그녀는 그녀가 곧 죽을 것이라는 것을 깨달았어요.
| She realized that she was going to die soon.
|
“아들아,” 그녀는 말했어요, “나는 오래 살지 못 할꺼야. 내가 죽으면, 제발 나를 산에 묻지 말고, 개울 가에 묻어다오.”
| “My son,” she said, “I won’t live much longer. When I die, please don’t bury me on the mountain, bury me beside the stream.”

비록 그녀는 산에 묻히길 원했지만 그녀의 아들이 그녀가 말한 반대로 할 것이란 것을 그녀는 알았기 때문에 이렇게 말했어요.
| Even though she wanted to be buried on the mountain, she said this because she knew her son would do the opposite of what she said.

몇 분 후 그녀는 죽었고, 청개구리는 울면서 말했어요, “오 나의 불쌍한 어머니! 그녀는 나 때문에 죽었어.”
| A few minutes later his mother died and the green frog cried and said, “Oh my poor mother! She died because of me.”

청개구리는 그의 어리석은 행동을 매우 후회하며 스스로에게 말했어요, “나는 항상 나의 어머니가 말씀하신 반대로 했어. 하지만 이번에는 그녀가 말한 그대로 해야만 해.”
| The green frog really regretted his stupid behavior and told himself, “I always did the opposite of what my mother said. But this time I have to do exactly what she told me to do.”

그래서 청개구리는 개울 가 옆에 그의 어머니를 묻었어요.
| So the green frog buried his mother beside the stream.

그는 잠을 전혀 잘 수 없었어요 왜냐하면 그는 그의 어머니의 무덤이 떠내려갈까봐 너무 걱정이 되었으니까요.
| He couldn’t sleep at all because he was really worried if his mother’s grave was going to be washed away.

어느 날, 폭풍이 불어 개울이 그 둑을 넘었어요.
| One day, there was a storm and the stream overflowed its banks.

그는 쏟아지는 빗 속에 앉아 계속 울었어요, “개굴 개굴! 제발 우리 어머니를 데려가지 마!”
| In the pouring rain he sat and cried over and over, “Kaegul-Kaegul! (ribbit-ribbit!) Please don't wash my mother away!”
|
비가 올때마다 그는 개울가에서 울고 또 울었어요.
| Every time it rained he cried and cried beside the stream.

그 후로 청개구리들은 비가 올때마다 “개굴-개굴” 운답니다.
| Ever since then, that is why green frogs cried “Kaegul-Kaegul” whenever it rains.

그래서 한국 사람들은 그들이 해야만 하는 것과 반대로 하는 말썽쟁이를 청개구리라고 부른답니다.
