TO BE and TO HAVE (tenses)
... om te wees, of om nie te wees nie — dit is die vraag!
What is a conjugated verb?
Maybe the easiest way to describe what a conjugated verb is, is to pretend conjugation does not exist. Then, we would say: "Yesterday I is sick, and today I is still a little sick, but by tomorrow I will not is sick anymore, I is sure."
I am sure you now have a great idea what conjugation is. In Latin for example, the conjugation was so important, you would say "Amo" to say I love, and "Amat" to say He loves. In English we have love and loves, but we still need to say "I" and "He" or you would not be clear on the meaning. In Afrikaans the pronouns I, you, he-she-it, we, you, they all use the same form of the verb.
All Afrikaans verbs, except these two, use the same form of the verb for Present, Future, and Past. These two verbs have one form for the present, one form for the past, and a third for the future tense.
Here are the two verbs: TO BE and TO HAVE.
Tenses: Present - Future - Past
TO BE - OM TE WEES | TO HAVE - OM TE Hê
Present Tense: IS Future Tense: sal WEES Past Tense: WAS or was GEWEES | Present Tense: HET Future Tense: sal Hê Past Tense: het geHAD
Examples (voorbeelde): — Janet is hier. — Janet sal Sondag hier wees. — Janet was hier (gewees). — Janet is siek. | Examples (voorbeelde): — Janet het 'n visie vir die skool. — Janet sal 'n visie vir die skool hê. — Janet het 'n visie vir die skool gehad. — Janet het vriende. — Janet sal vriende hê. — Janet het vriende gehad. |
